Review Tuesday: THE DICTATOR

I've been a fan of the work of Sacha Baron Cohen ever since my friend introduced me to his Ali G interviews before he came to US. So I had no doubt that I wanted to see THE DICTATOR on the big screen.

The Dictator is about the dictator of the African nation Wadiya. His career is paralleled by other horrible figures from the same part of the world. He's summoned to the US to account for his nuclear program. When he does so, he falls victim to a conspiracy to take the country away from him.

This is a real MOVIE. This is NOT a joke reel of guerilla comedy like BRUNO and BORAT. If you are expecting that, you will be disappointed. However, if you watch this with an open mind and expecting only to see a movie that's a comedy, you'll be richly rewarded. Cohen shows us, yet again, that he's an impressive comedic actor and carries the movie very well. His supporting cast does a great job as well. The humor flies at you fast and furious. If you are a "pee-cee" kinda guy, you should steer clear, but for the rest of us who enjoy something a little racy, this is a good time!

The movie is only one and a half hours, and it's filled with the good stuff. We walked out feeling we got our money's worth. You will, too, as long as your in touch with your low-brow funny-bone.

Good review Bobby. Definitely not Baron Cohen's funniest piece of work but still a lot better than I expected, since he is so damn great at staying in character the whole time. Still, I'm going to miss his mockumentary stuff.

Thanks!

While I loved Sacha's interviews, I don't think he can ever go back to that. He's just too high profile. Luckily he has skill as an actor. I'm wondering how he'll be as Freddie Mercury.
