Review Tuesday: Logan's Run

I haven't reviewed any old movies in a while, so here goes: LOGAN'S RUN. During the 1970s a bunch of socially conscious science fiction movies came out. Usually they dealt with some dire fear of the time, and life in a post-apocalyptic world. LOGAN'S RUN deals with age discrimination after the world is destroyed.

In the future, after we destroy the planet, a perfect life is created for humans in an idyllic city. The only drawback? You only get 30 years to live, then you face the Crousel. If you survive Carousel you can carry on. If you decide to run, enforcers called Sandmen will hunt you down and kill you.

Logan (Michael York) is a Sandman that the powers-that-be decides to run a little test with. The main computers allow him an ankh talisman and make him a runner to find sanctuary. The movie is about his adventures trying to get out of paradise so that he may survive. He's accompanied by Jessica (Jenny Agutter) who is a girl who decides to help Logan escape his fellow constabulary.

The movie is interesting in it's various twists and turns, but is HEAVILY 70s. The impact of the era makes it almost hard to watch. The haircuts. The clothing. Argh, the men in tights!

Of course the heroes make their way through all the obstacles and complete their tasks, and force a blow out of an ending that you probably saw coming from a mile away. It's still worth watching as it might make you think twice about criticizing some old fogey in the future. They only seem old until you join them at that age.

More on IMDB.
