Review Tuesday: SPECIES

After seeing PROMETHEUS earlier this summer, my interest in designs by H. R. Giger had been renewed. With that in mind I decided to watch another movie that featured designs based on his artwork: SPECIES.

When SETI receives a message from some alien source, they discover that it's a blueprint for a new lifeform. Once created, Sil escapes in an effort to survive and reproduce. Those same scientists have to track her down before she unleashes some new alien species on this planet.

The movie contains a brilliant all star cast. Michelle Williams as a child plays the role of young Sil expertly. Natasha Henstridge was a perfect choice as the adult Sil who is a sexy seductress trying to find a perfectly healthy candidate to impregnate her.

The movie is nearly two hours and moves at a pretty good pace. Due to being made back in 1995, while not so long ago, the movie does come off as somewhat crude. The special effects aren't top notch, but are pretty okay. Things like the cocoon are perfectly vile, while, Sil appearing in alien form isn't so seamless.

I realize that this movie is nearly 20 years old, but I have never gotten around to watching it all the way through. I watched it on my Kindle Fire via AMAZON INSTANT VIDEO which comes with a subscription to Amazon Prime. It's hi-rez and looks great on the screen, and the sound is perfect too. I know it's not the greatest of sci-fi stories ever told, but it was certainly fun to watch and follow the twists and turns. Not to mention how stunningly gorgeous Henstridge was on screen, in all her various states of undress.

More about the movie on IMDB.
Stream it on Amazon Instant Video.
