Believe it or not, this is the main reason why we decided to go to Vegas this year, to see PHANTOM OF THE OPERA at The Venetian. The theater was built ESPECIALLY to accommodate the show and its run will end in September. We didn't see it the last time we visited Vegas, so we planned a trip around it this time.
Anytime you go to a fine show you should plan a fine dinner to go along with it. Our charming friend, Jessica, who lives locally suggested Trattoria Reggiano, a small casual Italian restaurant. The food is excellent, the service is fast, friendly and helpful, and the portions are large. We got in and out with plenty of time for the 9:30 Phantom we had tickets for. **Ahem** Front row - center. Thank you, Jessica, for obtaining such amazing seats!
For the most part, Phantom in Vegas isn't very different from NYC, the departures, however are obvious. The Chandelier scene in the beginning is so grand, it's like a scene out of a science fiction movie. The theater is designed to look like an opera house from the 1800s with an audience already in it around the sides! Pieces of the shattered light come out from all over the auditorium and assemble over your head! There's no intermission, so the show is shortened by about 15 minutes. The sequence in the end is different. Raoul has a bigger worry than the hang-man's noose!
The cast was great, and I might even go so far as to say that the gentleman who plays the Opera Ghost was possibly the most terrifying, evil, and incredible Phantom we have ever seen. Previously, the Phantoms we've seen have been charming and likable, but this guy was bad to the bone, and really drove home the notion that he had Christine under his power. Brilliant acting!
Brilliant show! If you have the chance you should try to get in there before September 2, when the curtains fall for the final time for Phantom at the Venetian. It's well worth it!
