Review Tuesday: A Fighting Man of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs (1930, Barsoom Series #7)

The SEVENTH book in the Barsoom series by Edgar Rice Burroughs is A FIGHTING MAN OF MARS. While this is another book telling a tale about life on Mars, John Carter has a rather small role in the book and it's really about the adventures of Tan Hadron of Hastor.

When an unknown invading force with a horrible new weapon kidnapped Sonoma Tora, the dautghter of a noble, Tan Hadron goes on the adventure of his life to pursue the woman he loves.

In a similar vane, this is your basic tale of life on Barsoom. There's love lost. Violence. Perfidy. Unjust rulers. Strange creatures. Narrow escapes. New technology. Friends where you'd never expect to find them. Love. Of course, there are also the wild coincidences that make all these books outrageously fun.

This book seemed a bit longer than usual and it took me a little while to get through it. Let me remind you, this was written in 1930, so the concepts of stealth, flying ships and guided missiles were still wild and fantastical. Also, I have a feeling that this book is where the idea of the disintegration ray came from that was in the movie JOHN CARTER.

The concepts introduced in these books are very interesting to digest. Burroughs was way ahead of his time and had a tremendous imagination. Attach all that to the way books were written over eighty years ago and it certainly makes for some entertaining reading. If you were reading the Barsoom series, I recommend you keep going! Worth reading!
