Trivia
For what fruit is Haiti’s currency named?
  • The gourd, known in Haiti as gourde. In the early 1800s, the ruler of impoverished northern Haiti declared all gourds state property and had them brought to his treasury to be issued as currency. Eventually, banknotes and coins backed by gold replaced the cumbersome fruit, but gourde has been the name of Haiti’s official currency ever since.
