Dinner and a show - MUSE at MSG: 4/15/2013

Last November I saw that MUSE was coming to New York City to perform. APRIL 15TH. I thought, what better way to celebrate the end of tax season than with a concert  by a great band? I got the tixx and had to sit and wait for nearly six months for the show...

Before you get to any show you wan to have a fine meal. Right across the street (254 West 31st Street) from Madison Square Garden is a quaint pub style restaurant called IRISH TIMES. The place is clean. The service good. Food was served quickly, and it was tasty. Good place to keep in mind before a show.

Og course, this was on teh same day as the bombing of the Boston Marathon. There was an unnerving stepped up patrol of the NYPD.

The opening act was a Scottish band called BIFFY CLYRO. The name troubles me, as I can't commit it to memory or pronounce it for some reason. I was unfamiliar with them so I tried some of their vids on youtube. The ones I selected must've been all their ballads because they didn't play anything that didn't rock. They opened right up at around 8:00 with some really rockin' song, that I do not know the title of, that totally woke crowd up. I know little about them, but it seemed to me the band was three guys, then they had a keyboardist and a rhythm guitarist with them. What made me think they weren't members? They were set in the dark for the entire performance. Their 40 minute set was good. I'm glad we got in to see it in it's entirety.

MUSE hit the stage shortly after nine. They have a very complex stage show, even though their music is complex enough that you don't need the distraction. The opened with SUPREMACY, from the new album, The 2nd Law. They went on to perform for nearly two hours. The songs ranged from very new to very old. (You may or may not realize that they have been putting out records ever since the 90s!) Matt Bellamy (lead vox and guitar) has an extraordinary voice and his mic set up was perfect. His voice held up perfectly the entire night and the level and quality of the sounds was better than you'd expect in a big venue like MSG. He baffles me with his guitar-work. Like any guitarist, he switches a instruments during the show, but I never noticed him going near his bank of distortion pedals through most of the show. No matter, I have seen guitar techs doing the stomping at other shows, so I assume that's the case here. Bassist Chris Wolstenholme does  a great job. His licks and backgroud vocals reinforce the music well, and his sound was strong and clear. He's not one of those guys who runs around the stage much. He mostly keeps to stage right and out of Matt's way. Being a drummer, I found myself compelled to watch Dominic Howard the most. It's a bad habit of mine because I like to see other drummer's techniques, but I had to. Dominic is a lefty and it screws with my brain watching the drums being played in the mirror image of what I'm used to. He's a great drummer and it was a hoot to watch him play. If you don't pay attentions you might miss their additional touring musician Morgan Nicholls – keyboards, synthesisers, percussion, backing vocals (2004, 2006–present). His sound is just as important as everyone else's and they treat him as such.

I would list song songs, but it's days after the show and I can't really remember the set list. I remember hearing these, but not in this order:
  • Supremacy
  • Starlight
  • Panic Station
  • Hysteria
  • Madness
  • Man With a Harmonica / Knights of Cydonia
  • The 2nd Law: Isolated System
  • The 2nd Law: Unsustainable
  • Uprising
  • New Born
  • Time Is Running Out
  • Liquid State
  • Undisclosed Desires
  • Supermassive Black Hole,
  • Survival (the finale for all shows on this tour)
Other songs I know they're playing on this tour, but I can't be sure if they did or didn't the night I saw them are:
  • Plug In Baby
  • Stockholm Syndrome
  • Map of the Problematique
My only gripe is that they didn't play my fav song ASSASSIN, which is chilling and rocking at the same time. However, they certainly played plenty of great songs! You get the price of admission for sure!
