Review Tuesday: Judge Dredd The Complete Case Files 01

Whether you were a metal head or a comic book fan during the 1980s you were, undoubtedly, aware of Judge Dredd. Whether you read the books or knew the the Anthrax song, you knew his most famous line, I AM THE LAW!

After having recently become reacquainted with the Dredd novels, I decided to go back as far as possible and try to learn the Dredd histories.

JUDGE DREDD:
THE COMPLETE CASE FILES 01

is a compilation of the Dredd comics from 2000 AD Progs. Under this cover you start from the very beginning, the years 2099 through 2100. You have the very origins and evolution of the prototypical Judge Dredd as you watch him evolve into the stonefaced icon you recognize today.
In a post-apocalyptic world, the US is reduced to two of Mega-Cities, containing nearly 500 million citizens each on either coast. To speed up the legal process a policing force of JUDGES enforce the law. One Judge will, on the spot, be Judge, Jury, and if it fits the crime, Executioner. We get to follow the adventures one of the most feared and by-the-book Judges, Joseph Dredd, as he does his job upholding the law.
This edition of the case files includes
  • the ROBOT WAR,
  • the introduction of Walter the Wobot,
  • as well as Dredd's time as the Marshall of the Moon.
Of course, there are many clever tales in between. It's interesting to watch how Dredd goes from short episodes to longer serials. While the look of Dredd becomes more refined, the character of the man remained consistent. He's smart. He's tough. He's the LAW!

A definite MUST READ! Get to it, citizen!
