Matthew Smith is back to writing Dredd with CITY FATHERS.
A young Dredd is on the case of a murdered informant which leads him on an intricate path of drugs, violence and retribution.
This is a very involved story. It would fit perfectly within the genres of THRILLER, DRAMA, MYSTERY, DETECTIVE, CRIME, etc. type novels. Judge Dredd just happens to be the main guy.
The author cleverly shows Dredd as a full bird Judge one year out of the academy. He's not perfect, YET. He makes some mistakes like walking on evidence, and shows frustration when he's not shown full respect due to his young age. All the elements of Ol' Stoneface are in there. His disdain for those who break the law and his dedication to the job are the overall themes. as always, he's quick on his feet, both mentally and physically.
The book is pretty good. It amused me that I liked this one while Smith also wrote the Dredd book "The Final Cut" that I hated so much. This might be worthwhile reading for a Judge Dredd fan as we are given a look at how the younger version reacted to events. Even if you're not a fan, it's still a pretty good crime story. Give it a shot!
