A friend sent me an email not too long ago about a Living Social deal on tickets to see iLuminate's "Artist of Light" at The New World Stages, 340 West 50th Street. I didn't know too much about it other than they had been on America's Got talent and that the tickets were very reasonably priced. So we all went.
Synopsis
iLuminate wowed the nation with their groundbreaking light suits on "America's Got Talent" and then took to the road, performing for awestruck crowds around the world.
Now, iLuminate takes you on a fantastical journey in the latest production of their New York show, "Artist of Light," which tells the story of Jacob, a talented young artist who struggles to connect with the real world. He takes comfort in his magical paintbrush, which grants him the power to turn the characters of his imagination into living, breathing creatures. When a jealous bully steals the paintbrush and uses it for evil, turning Jacob's sweet creations into horrifying monsters, Jacob must face danger without the help of his miraculous tool. He fights to save his town and friends, all while knowing the paintbrush that brought him so much joy is now a weapon in the hands of a villain bent on destruction.
Music, art, and the technological magic of iLuminate bring you a story of adventure and romance told through dance styles from contemporary to hip-hop to breaking and using the power of light. We invite you to join us for "Artist of Light," an original and wholly unforgettable theatrical experience!

The show started just after 8PM and concluded by 9PM. It's not very long but it's an hour chocked full of goodness. From the moment the lights go out the iLumination begins. It's a story told entirely with dance, but also with real time light up special effects. People appear and vanish. Body parts. Artwork. It's just amazing. The technology they use, which I assume is LEDs worked via remote control, is outstanding. It's integrated so precisely with the choreography that it's absolutely baffling how it can be done. I don't know how they do it, but it's brilliant!
I didn't read the synopsis until I started writing this review. I had no idea of anyone's name but the story came across exactly as they intended even though there is very little spoken word involved at all.
The show is relatively short, but the story is told with style and it fascinates you to the point that you may forget to blink, because you can miss something in that split second. A very fun show and well worth seeing!
