Review Tuesday: JUDGE DREDD: THE COMPLETE CASE FILES 05

After having recently become reacquainted with the Dredd novels, I decided to go back as far as possible and try to learn the Dredd histories.

JUDGE DREDD: THE COMPLETE CASE FILES 05
is a compilation of the Dredd comics from 2000 AD Progs. Under this cover you start from the years 2103 through 2104.
In a post-apocalyptic world, the US is reduced to two of Mega-Cities, containing nearly 500 million citizens each on either coast. To speed up the legal process a policing force of JUDGES enforce the law. One Judge will, on the spot, be Judge, Jury, and if it fits the crime, Executioner. We get to follow the adventures one of the most feared and by-the-book Judges, Joseph Dredd, as he does his job upholding the law.
This edition of the case files includes the return of Judge Death thanks to the other three dark Judges (Mortis, Fear and Fire), some briefings on crime in the future, a hot dog run, Block Mania which was, in a way, a long term result of the whole face-off with Pirate Skank / SovBlok Judge Nikita Kram and ultimately feeds directly into super-epic THE APOCALYPSE WAR. East Meg / the SovBlok wage an all out war on Mega-City One. It's about 25 parts of bitter war. In a way, the entire story arc really is a reflection of fears arising from the Cold War at that time. Remember, this was probably written back in 1982. Then as quickly as the war sets in, it's drawn to an end when Dredd infamously nuked East Meg into a giant hole in the ground with their own weapons. It's a terrifying and provocative story as you can see how such destruction could be possible.

One oddity in this collection, in my opinion, would be the death of Judge Giant. He figures prominently in several of the recently written books. I'm trying to figure that out. My friend suggests it could be a result of cloning. We'll see. I'm already curious what the next set of case files might contain.

Of course, Dredd becomes even more set in his ways. He's tougher than ever before. He's smart. He's by the book. He's the LAW!

A definite MUST READ! Get to it, citizen!
