Last Friday I was headed to the movies with Mrs Bax0jayz and friends to see Godzilla when someone said, "ya know what? I'm REALLY in the mood for that Million Ways to Die movie." And just like that, we changed our minds and saw the comedy instead.
A Million Ways to Die in the West
As a cowardly farmer begins to fall for the mysterious new woman in town, he must put his new-found courage to the test when her husband, a notorious gun-slinger, announces his arrival.
Despite how that synopsis sounds, this is a a very dirty comedy set in the West in 1882. When people heard that they immediately felt they should try comparing it with the legendary BLAZING SADDLES. How can you compare anything to cinematic royalty? Put that out of your head. Seth MacFarlane has given us Family Guy, American Dad, The Cleveland Show and TED. All very funny comedies. Why couldn't his wild west comedy about a shepherd learning to get some backbone be funny as well?
Indeed, it is. Clocking in at nearly two hours, A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST doesn't actually pack in a million ways to kick the bucket in the filthy, dirty, old west (at best a dozen or so are depicted) but it does pack in a load of humor where you might not expect it. The odd blend of old west with modern humor (they suggest some people are just born into the wrong period of history) worked very well for me. I found myself laughing straight through. But don't get any wrong ideas. This is a collection of dirty jokes. There's nothing politically correct about it. It's low-brow humor, plain and simple. If this interests you, you'll be pleased, but if you're easily offended, you should pass on this. Between sheep penis, Sarah Silverman acting out her ARISTOCRATS joke, racism, explosive diarrhea, daisies in weird places, and on and on, there's plenty to find offensive.
I found the movie clever and entertaining and worth the price of admission based on the rib ache from belly laughs. If you like MacFarlane's style, you will definitely enjoy this flick.
