Review Tuesday: LUCY (2014)

I actually got out to the movies last weekend to see one of this summer's blockbusters...

LUCY
When a woman is forced into being a drug mule, the runners unwittingly unleash the full power of her mind.
This hasn't been a great summer for me getting to the movies. I can't even remember the last movie I saw. When Mrs. Bax0jayz requested a date night including a movie I was pretty happy. It was between Lucy and Hercules. She wasn't interested in Sex Tape, despite being a rated R comedy or last week's #1, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Since Lucy was rated R and Hercules wasn't, that was her choice. Fine with me. A movie starring Scarlett Johansson? Let's go!

Lucy is a woman dating Richard. Once again we have proof that Richard is long for DICK, because he tricks her into making a drug drop with a vicious South-Asian drug lord. Richard is immediately killed and Lucy is forced to become a drug mule. She, along with a hand full of other mules were surgically implanted with some new narcotic that is a synthesized chemical version of what creates life in the womb. Taken as an adult, it creates a euphoria that is high in demand in Europe.

Unfortunately for Lucy, one of her captors happens to find her attractive. When she turns his advances down he beats the crap out of her, including a couple kicks to the gut rupturing the bag of narcotics. From that moment on Lucy is no longer the same person. The chemical begins to unlock the recesses of the brain that had previously never been used by any creature on the Earth.

The rest of the movie is about Lucy trying to acquire the rest of the drug so she can find out what will happen when we use 100% of the brain, while trying not to be killed by the drug lord responsible for this situation.

The movie is a surreal ninety minute roller coaster. I found it thoroughly enjoyable while not being simple or dumb.

I've been told that this plot is exactly the same as LIMITLESS but I wouldn't know as I refused to watch that movie because I hate the ferret-faced Bradly Cooper. So to me, Lucy is fun and original. If it is that close to LIMITLESS and you've seen it already, then you might not be compelled to plunk down your cinema dollars for it.
