star-crossed \ STAHR-krawst, -krost \ , adjective;
  • thwarted or opposed by the stars; ill-fated: star-crossed lovers.
Origin: The earliest citation of star-crossed comes from William Shakespeare in the late 1500s, although the word star had been used to refer to celestial bodes that exercised influence on human affairs as early as the 1200s. By the 1600s, star had an expanded sense of "a person's destiny, fortune, temperament, etc., regarded as influenced and determined by the stars."
