Review Tuesday: INDIGO BLUE by FREE DOMINGUEZ

Years ago I was introduced to a band called Kidneythieves. They were described as "Static-X with a female singer" which isn't far off. Just listen to Zerøspace and you'll see. Ever since that day that I first gave them a listen, I've been following the band and Free Dominguez who sings like an angel. Of course, the band has been more often on hiatus than in the studio working on new music in recent years, which brings us to today's review.

INDIGO BLUE

Free Dominguez appears to be full of music. She's had several solo projects over the years. Most recently she decided to go the KICKSTARTER route for the new record. The goals were very reasonably priced and for the price of a record you could chip in towards the production of that album, and get MP3s, bonus tracks and an autographed CD in the mail for your effort. Not a bad deal, as long as you like the music.
Needless to say, the Kickstarter was a success and the album got made. My digital copy arrived a while ago, with the hard copy arriving shortly thereafter.

The tracklist:
  1. Mr. Goodnight 4:45
  2. Map and a Light 4:27
  3. Indigo Blue 5:14
  4. Glass Walls 4:47
  5. Absolutely Home 4:41
  6. Golden Wings 4:28
  7. Weightless 4:26
  8. Moonlight 4:57
  9. Rain Becomes 3:10
  10. World Away 4:47
I'm not going to lie. Anything with a female singer usually scores extra points in my book. Free, however, has a an exceptionally delicious voice that could be laid down upon any music and still sound heavenly. Luckily, in the case of the album INDIGO BLUE the music is a perfect compliment.

If you are expecting some guitar-industrial type music like Kidneythieves, you will be disappointed. This is a solo project. This record has much more mellow rhythms and harmonies about it.

Considering the cost of production, this recird is very nicely polished. Vocals? PERFECT. Loops? PERFECT! Rhythm? PERFECT! Drum sound? PERFECT? And did I mention Vocals? Naturally, but I'll say it again, Free's vocals are perfect, like notes sung by an angel.

Looking back at this project, I am pleasantly surprised how quickly such an ambitious project was imagined, funded, produced, and put into the hands of the investors in such little time, while being a high quality album of music. I am thoroughly impressed and pleased with INDIGO BLUE.
