Review Tuesday: Solo: A Star Wars Story

SOLO
A Star Wars Story
Han Solo leaves Corellia to find action and adventure across the galaxy.
This is the long awaited origins story for the beloved space pirate Han Solo. We finally get to meet the young and ambitious orphan desperate to leave the mean streets of Corellia to make a life running scams anywhere else. His daring plan to sneak off planet with his girlfriend Qi'Ra fizzles, he's forced to enlist into the Imperial Military to get off planet. That's when the adventure begins! We see how Han first meets Chewbacca. How Han got his first gig in shady business. When Han met Lando. We get to see Han make the legendary Kessel Run in record time. And of course, we see how Han wins the Millennium Falcon from Lando.

The movie is brilliant. Ron Howard did and excellent job directing this film. Couple that with an outstanding cast and you have a really great Star Wars film to add to the franchise. There is a lot of fan dire over this installment. Most fans are angry with Disney dropping this film so soon after THE LAST JEDI, trying to milk as much money out of the franchise as quickly as possible. In my opinion, these people are NOT fans at all. Just professional babies whining and crying and not taking advantage of this latest movie. The gripe seems to really be that THE LAST JEDI was sorely lacking. While it was entertaining, it was a fairly weak plot with a bunch of poorly developed unlikable characters. So the "fans" took their animosity out on Disney by staying home for SOLO. That was their mistake because Solo is substantially better than TLJ.

I would say I really enjoyed this film, but only had one minor issue. Han said he had no people when he enlisted, so the officer assigned him the last name SOLO, however he later recalls going with his father to the assembly lines for YT-1300 freighters (like the Falcon). So I assume he just didn't want to divulge his family name for some reason? What happened to his parents that he ended up an orphan on the streets? Is this a device meant to be issue in a future film, as Alden Ehrenreich signed a contract for THREE movies with Disney. Now that's all up in the air. The movie cost $250 mill to make and cleared more than $310 mill worldwide at this point. Will that be enough to motivate Disney to make another?

At any rate, I highly recommend this for any STAR WARS fan or even someone new to the series.
