STAR WARS
Episode IX
THE RISE OF SKYWALKER
by Rae Carson
After a mysterious broadcast of Emperor Palpatine occurs, the Resistance and the First Order are in a race to find him.
I have a habit of reading the novelizations of movies. Or reading the source material that movies are based on. Or anything like that, because I like to find the extra details, the introspection and background that a movie can't just include because they want the film to be under three hours long. I had a hunch that THE RISE OF SKYWALKER would be a perfect example of this theory, and was right.
The movie came out last December, and over five months have elapsed. I will be including spoilers. Don't like it? Tough!
I have to admit. I went into the theater last December to see the movie with ZERO expectations after Episode 8, but remained extremely hopeful. The fancy pants reviewers already panned the movie as well as a bunch of people who didn't even bother to go see it. Since I have been a huge fan of the franchise ever since 1977, I wasn't going to allow a bunch of big jerks ruin the ending of the series that changed my life without even seeing it on my own. With an open mind, I watched and enjoyed the movie very much. However, I KNEW there were many details that couldn't be fit onto the screen and have the final product play at a reasonable amount of time. I had already pre-ordered the book and waited with baited breath for it to show up on my Kindle.
Rae Carson did a fine job of not only perfectly relaying into words what went on on-screen, but filling in the details and answering questions the fans may have had in their minds.
EXAMPLES:
How was Emperor Palpatine able to survive the events of the second Death Star? Apparently he DID learn the secret of living beyond death from Darth Plagueis. However, it's more complicated than just resurrecting. You need a vessel to implant your essence into. The clone he had been working on for himself, for just such an emergency wasn't quite ready for possession when Darth Vader threw Palpatine into the reactor core. That was why Palpatine seemed to be decomposing in Ep9. The vessel wasn't ready to contain the might of Palpatine. At the end, when Rey destroyed the Emperor, hopefully he doesn't have any other vessels ready to accept him elsewhere.
The Knights of Ren were a;lways under Palpatine's control, which is why they so easily turned against Kylo.
The switchblade lightsaber that dark Rey wielded was an idea that Rey mused about at the beginning of the book.
We finally got our Snoke origin story, albeit brief. He was, of course, created by Palpatine for the purpose of creating the FIRST ORDER in preparation of the Emperor's return when time was right.
What id this DYAD in the Force? We never heard of it before. Or have we? The Sith were ALWAYS searching for a dyad in teh force, another reason there were always two Sith Lords at any time.
Who were those masses in the coliseum on Exegol? Sith cultists. These were the loyalists who kept the remnants of the Empire in repair and functioning during the years Palpatine was in self-exile.
More introspection around the redemption of Ben Solo.
And there are many many more examples. As a result, I would call this book well worth your time to read especially if you are a fan of the STAR WARS movies.
