Review Tuesday: We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011)

Lolo Loves Films: Movie Review: "We Need to Talk About Kevin" (2011)

We Need to Talk About Kevin
A view into the life of Eva as her life is changed with the birth of her sociopath son Kevin.
Usually when Mrs Bax0jyaz selects something from the horror genre for movie night. So this seemed like an odd choice at first. This seems like a feminist story of sorts, at least at first. The movie bounces back and forth from modern times to days of the past. You are aware something happened. Something bad, maybe really bad. Maybe TRAGIC, even. So it draws in your sense of curiosity.

Eva, played by Tilda Swinton, is a strong woman who travels the world with her husband, Franklin (played by John C Reilly), has life as she knows it come to a screeching halt when she ends up pregnant.

From the start their son Kevin appears to be messing with her. Creating trouble, and testing her patience. In fact, he even seems to be playing his parent AGAINST each-other, even while he was in diapers. You get to watch the development Kevin into a sociopath (despite the fact that children cannot be determined to be sociopaths) and how it impacts every soul around him.

This movie is creepy and oddly compelling. While the cast does an excellent job, you learn to NOT like everyone. Even Eva, who is a victim of sorts, isn't very likable. That aside. this movie is a train wreck. You can't even blink while watching. You hate it, but can't look away. Even though you KNOW something awful is coming, you are STILL shocked when it does.

If anything, this is the sort of movie that people who HATE kids should watch. They'd be like, SEE?!?! once it ends. I was told that the book this movie is based on is even creepier. I am not sure if I could put myself through that sort of material. But if you want to watch something that might cause you to lose sleep, feel free to put this on.
