Review Tuesday: MORBIUS [2022]

MORBIUS | Sony Pictures Entertainment

MORBIUS
A crippled genius figures out how to bypass his disability, but it makes him into an actual vampire.
Of all the low-end villains, MORBIUS was one of my least favorites. He was a stupid looking vampire and I had little to no interest in him. When I herd they had a film based on this character, starring Jared Leto, I was baffled. My first thought was WHY???

In a post-Covid world, Mrs Bax0jayz and I have been traveling more. So one of the in-flight movies, recently offered, was MORBIUS. Since I never liked the character, I figured tis was my best opportunity to see it without any expense on my part.

The movie starts off at a clinic for rich disabled youths in Greece. The kid who has already been there a while, named Michael Morbius, tells the latest patient that one day, he will cure them. Fast forward over 20 years and Michael Morbius (played by Jared Leto) decides that splicing human genes with vampire bats will solve this disability issue. As you would expect, the hypothesis works, but at the cost of thirst for violence and human blood. He tells his benefactor Lukasz (played by Matt Smith, best known as one of the Doctors Who) that the price to be more functional is not worth it, while standing there, walking around normally, and magically beautiful and muscular. Oh yeah, that's a deterrent. So, unbeknownst to Michael, Lukasz gives himself the serum and becomes a modern vampire as well. Instead of teaming up and trying to help each-other, the two lock in preternatural battle for supremacy.

While the special effects and casting were pretty good for this film, the story / plot was pretty stupid. One of the few things that held my attention was Adria Anjona, who played Michael's love interest, Martine. What a looker se is, and she will be back since she was made into a vampire in the traditional way.

Marvel had high hopes for this, but I wonder if they actually read the script or watched the movie. It wasn't that good. Why was this important for the MCU? Why was this low-level villain worthy of his own flick? Were they planning a franchise from this, and what were they planning on connecting Morbius to Spider-Man despite the current franchise reaching it's end? Too many questions and not enough answers yields a disappointment, which you can see in the box-office numbers for this film. Don't spend money to see this.

In a word, disappointing. This chick, the co-star, however, made the movie more compelling to watch!
