Review Tuesday: Goodnight Mommy (2022)

Goodnight Mommy
A trip to mom's place turns suspicious.
A couple weeks ago we were visiting with friends and were trying to pick something to watch. Despite my reservations about any movies starring children, we went with this anyway.

We start off with a dad dropping off his sons with their mother. The first thing you notice is that the place is silent and the father just leaves them on the porch and doesn't even make sure anyone is home to receive them. To me, that was the beginning of endless bad writing in this film. The rest of the movie is all about how the mom, who is wearing a mask because she had some work done, and can't expose her face, is acting terribly suspicious. I mean, every time they show the woman, she gives off ZERO maternal vibe and acts like a criminal who stole someone's identity. She doesn't do any of the things the boys hold so dear anymore.

It all turns out to be a massive misdirection. The last five to ten minutes explains what's going on, but still the writing is so bad that it's not even some awesome revelation. They try SO HARD to lead you in the wrong direction that they didn't even care if any of it would end up hurting the story in the long run.  It's just a let down. Here's a spoiler. One of the big misdirections is mom (played by a very sexy Naomi Watts) has to wear this mask because of some work she had done. I mentioned that before. But she takes it off to show she truly IS the mom and not an imposter, and you ask what work did she had done??? The ending is bad, and stupid, and unsatisfying, and reinforced my opinion that I will not watch horror / suspense films with child stars. It's always some bullshit like this. This also happens to be a remake of a European film with the same title, but now I can save myself some time and not bother watching that one either!

For a bad time watch it on AMAZON
