Review Tuesday: In the cinema - KICK-ASS

Last weekend I finally had a chance to geek-out and see KICK-ASS. The papers all hailed this as an amazing movie, and the buzz from regular people was that it was well worth watching.

I heard this was another film about costumes with no actual super powers. I was thinking maybe something like Watchmen, but this isn't nearly as serious. Kick-Ass is a high school comic book nerd named Dave Lizewski who decided he's been bullied enough times and decided to don a green wet suit and fight crime.

The trouble is, he has no skills. He immediately gets himself in stabbed and hit by a car and in the hospital. He's lucky to be alive, but now has a steel reinforced skeleton (to put all the broken bones back together) and nerve damage that gives him a high tolerance for pain.

Even so, Kick-Ass is still over his head. He squeaks out of a jam thanks to the intervention of Big Daddy and Hit Girl. Luckily the other two actually have their acts together and have a bone to pick with a local mob boss.

The first hour of the movie develops the characters, the second hour is dedicated to some serious action. Any time that Hit-Girl is on the screen, she steals the show. Her action sequences are vicious and well choreographed.

I felt there were certainly some problems with the movie. I thought it was weird when Hit-Girl finally makes her entrance. She's slicing and dicing villains but smiling and making goofy faces to Kick-Ass the whole time. Other than that, I found the move completely enjoyable.
I agree with fellow blogger Steve Bunche that if there's a sequel, it should be about Hit-Girl. Her scenes are amazing. But with the ending of this flick, I kinda don't see why there would be a sequel. She attained her goal.

Since the movie really slid down the ladder in the box office sales, it might not be around much longer, so see it on the big screen while you can.
