Review Tuesday: PEACEMAKER, Season 2 (2025)

Peacemaker goes on a journey of self-discovery. 

The Snyderverse being replaced by the GUNN-iverse is still relatively new. After the success of The Suicide Squad in 2021, and the surprise hit that the series PEACEMAKER had become, some people had high hopes for the direction that DC was headed. Of course, the Snyder-bros weren't very happy and jumped on the wokey bandwagon to hurl insults at SUPERMAN. Truth be told, SUPERMAN was pretty good and after seeing PEACEMAKER for two seconds in that movie created curiosity about his second season. 

 

PEACEMAKER: Season Two (Final)

After teh events of Peacemaker Season One, Chris (Peacemaker, played by John Cena) was at odds with himself and was trying to figure out how he fit into this world. After going through his father's multi-dimensional doorway, Peacemaker thinks he best fits in ANOTHER world, in which his family is ALIVE and caring, and he has a romantic relationship with Harcourt (Jennifer Holland). The only trouble is that it's a tyrannical world in which the Germans won WW2. It takes his friends to crossover and bring him back. 

 

In all honesty, this season dragged and was dull. There are some really notable highlights, but they are spread out pretty thin over this series. They probably could've edited this down and made it into a two hour movie that would've been more captivating. However, the path that they took seemed more like, okay, I have this funny idea, let's figure out a way to jam it in. 

 

Gunn likes to have some sort of moral to each of his stories, and usually it's something wholesome and heartwarming, something about love and friends and family. I can see that was the goal with this one too. Peacemaker was looking for where he belonged, but he was already where he needed to be because that's where his friends are, the people ho loves and who loves him. The path to get there was circuitous and dull. There were some high-points. Sol Rodriguez as Sasha Bordeaux is STUNNING. Jennifer Hoilland as Emilia Harcourt is stunning. I feel like we got more out of Freddie Stroma's character VIGILANTE this season, and he's no joke! Judomaster (Nhut Le) is less of a scumbag and actually likable by the end. Tim Meadows as Langston Fleury is hilarious and the hjgh-point of the season. The thread about Red St Wild aka Captain Cultural Appropriation (Michael Rooker) vs Eagly is pretty funny. If it seems like there was quite a bit to look out for, keep in mind that the good stuff was buried amongst a lot of dull angsty stuff that just droned on.

 

Gunn says that the events of this series will lead directly into the next Superman movie. I don't think it's hard to tell what he means by that, but he sacrificed this season of Peacemaker to make some points that could've easily been explained with some exposition in the next movie. Instead, we got a flat final season of Peacemaker as Gunn has said this show has run its course.
