trepan \trih-PAN\, noun:

1. a person who ensnares or entraps others.
2. a stratagem; a trap.

verb:

3. to cheat or swindle.

Trepan is of unknown origin, though it might have come from thieves' slang. The noun describing a person entered English in the mid-1600s, followed shortly after by the verb.

no offense

A phrase used to make insults seem socially acceptable. Usually said just before an unbelievably rude and offensive statement is about to be made.
