Review Tuesday: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024)

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice review: Spooky and nostalgic, but it lost the plot

Lydia's daughter gets suckered into the afterlife.
My sister loved Beetlejuice. She used to watch it all the time. She watched the animated show. She just loved it and it was on so often in some form or another that it was unavoidable around the house. So when the sequel showed up, I felt like I wanted to see it yet wasn't in any hurry. So when it was an inflight movie, the opportunity presented itself.

So this movie has layers of plot. I might even call this one of Tim Burton's more involved works. Decades after the events of the first film, Lydia Deetz gets called home after her father dies on a trip. While visiting the family home Lydia's daughter Astrid meets what seems like a nice boy, but is really a ghost who is trying to trick her into taking his spot in the afterlife so he can come back to the world of the living. Lydia is forced to ask Beetlejuice for assistance to remedy the situation. Mayhen ensues.

When the original Beetlejuice came out during the late 1980s, it was something of a vehicle for Winona Ryder, everyone's fav spooky Goth girl. So it seems appropriate that Beetlejuice got dusted off when the world is in love with a new spooky Goth girl - Jenna Ortega. Being totally honest, I felt this revival was simply a cash grab. cash in on the nostalgia market and the Jenna Ortega love with one movie. Smart planning, to be honest. But when I actually watched it, it was a fun movie, similar in the way of the original but was something entirely new. Yep. It was fun to watch. I can see my sister as a child wanting to add this tot eh Beetlejuice rotation.
