Top mount starter defies easy replacement

I've been having minor starting problems in my 1991 Subaru Legacy Station Wagon. I'm not sure what the problems was exactly. It'll start perfectly then one day it'll give me problems. Once it wouldn't turn, but did with a jump. Another time I unplugged the battery and after I reconnected the juice, the car started right up.

It may be computer related.

It may not be.

But since I had an extra starter and it's mounted on top I figured it'll be a quick job, so, why not? I was SO wrong. There is no way to get to the bottom bolt from the top. You still have to get under the damned car to do this job. I've replaced starters in Fords and GMs in the past and usually they are much easier than this project.

Another BOO! on Subaru for poor design and accessability.
