The Great Neck chronicles begin

Before I became an accountant I was a yogurt store manager in Great Neck, LI, NY. My friend Jon got me the job there. Jon is not Jonathan the creepy brother of the gay stalker Mark, but we all grew up together and knew each other pretty well. There are many tales that involve my tall blond friend Jon, but they will wait for other days.

This blog post is really just an overview of that time period when I worked in that yogurt shop owned by the brothers Anthony and Louis and the things that went on behind the counters and behind people's backs.

Great Neck is a town of "the new rich" as mentioned in the classic book The Great Gatsby. Old money may find these people petty and uncouth. They travel about in flashy cars, in designer clothes, with plastic smiles, and will try to chew you down for 25 cents on a frozen yogurt. Disgusting, ruthless, heartless, gossipping people.

At the time I was about 21 or 22. I appeared to be the epitome of a "rocker" clad in all black, boots, and my very long locks pulled together into a pony tail that went about halfway down my back. A far cry from the vision of the accountant that I am today.

But before I could distinguish myself amongst the other workers and gain favor in the eyes of the bosses, I had to start somewhere in this place. Jon got me the job when a position opened up.

How did this position open up? Well it appeared that one of the guys was boasting to the other workers about how he steals money from the register at his other job. He would "break" a large bill he had, but didn't really have and make change. Usually he'd toss in a $20 and make change of a $100. How the bosses didn't pick up on this I have no idea. How can the register be consistently be off by $80 or more and not arouse suspicion? Evidently it did and weasel boy Johnny B. was thrown out on his ear. He actually tried to fight it and his mother even called Anthony and begged him to allow their little angel have his jog back. Unbeknownst to Johnny he was caught on camera partaking in his improprieties. Anthony told Johnny and his mother that if they didn't leave him alone about the job that he would take the tape to the local constabulary and file formal charges.

The harassment ceased. I got a new job in Great Neck. This was my first taste of stupidity in this town, and it wouldn't be my last.
