I have a habit at every place I've ever worked: I don't spend the boss' money. I don't ask for new equipment. I don't ask for special software. Nothing. However, during this past tax season I was running into all sorts of troubles with the archaic workstation I had been using. Even with the most up to date version of Windows and a ton of RAM the machine was still choking on the programs I needed to do my job. Mrs. Boss noticed that I was having trouble and made a mental note.
This past weekend the boss used my coworkers PC and had to leave the desk. He felt the old 15" CRT monitor was an eyesore and wouldn't harm his eyes using the menace. He told his wife that he wanted new monitors to replace the old ones and he was informed of the mess that my PC had degenerated into.
So we ordered a new machine and monitor for my work station, and a monitor for the other guy. I insisted that the tech guy try to work with my old hdd, since it was only a year old and had about 20 gigs free. Be grudgingly he did so, but in the long run he admitted it saved a lot of time in software installations, etc. Now I'm flying on this machine. It's a P4 2.8 GHz. What's interesting is that the PC I built myself about two years ago is an AMD Athlon 2400+. Speeds haven't really been booming in that time. Shocking, but good for the public since it seems the field has stabilized for a little while.
