4th of July Weekend: The Amish

On Monday we decided to head to Lancaster for the Amish farmhouse tour. It's always intrigued me how these people live in this modern world, yet they don't partake in any of the conveniences. They took us on a tour of the house and the grounds, but they had a lot of intriguing information.

In particular, they seem to be bending the rules and ARE taking advantage of a lot of the modern technology.

For instance, cell phones are showing up more and more often. Some stores have computers. The buggies have headlights and radios. The buggies also have hydraulic drum brakes. They run a lot of their equipment from air compressors. They use bottled gas. They use regular mattresses. They use regular taxis. They go to the same hospitals. It sounds a lot like life anyplace in the US.

So I felt that this whole Amish thing is a big scam that the media has been perpetuating, even embellished.

It was very interesting, but I felt ripped off.
