What is a sign of a good movie? Whether or not it holds up in time. More than 20 years since Ridley Scott brought us Bladerunner, it still packs the same thrill.
In 1982 when Bladerunner hit the theaters, it was a bit different than the director's cut I rented recently. All I can remember were that they removed the narrations by Harrison Ford during the movie. I scarcely remember any of them, and find that I really didn't need them to follow the story.
And what a story it is!
It's about a time in the future. It's 2017 and mankind has figured out how to duplicate life. Artificial life. They are called replicants. But the replicants have become too smart, and became emotional and revolt. They aren't allowed on Earth, and if they come here they are hunted by Bladerunners. Harrison Ford plays a blade named Rick Deckard. He's brought in to take out a team of replicants, led by Rutger Hauer, that made their way to the earth, and left a trail of death along the way.
The replicants came to earth to "meet their makers" and to try to get more life. Replicants have a very short lifespan, and these self-aware constructs don't want to die.
Deckard tracks them down one by one and takes them out. In the process he takes several beatings. Also along the line he falls in love with a replicant who didn't even know she was one!
Great special effects. Great story. Ridley Scott created a similarly eery feel, very similar to ALIEN. Music by Vangelis only stepped up the mood.
All around great movie. Thrilling. Inspiring. Art. A must see.
