On DVD: VULGAR

This is one movie that lives up to the title, and not necessarily for the reasons you might first think.

This is another View Askew Production, so the mind of Kevin Smith was involved in this, even though it was written and directed by Bryan Johnson.

In a nut shell, it's the story of a man named Will Carlson (played by Brian Christopher O'Halloran, aka Dante from Clerks) who works as a party clown called Flappy to scrape out a miserable living. He has problems at appointments that lead to him not getting paid. His complaining mother is in a retirement home, and treats him like rubbish. His car is a complete wreck. He gets bombarded by kids with water balloons. Bums are sleeping in his car. It's not a good day, nor even a good life for Will.

So he tries to come up with something to drum up extra cash. A prank clown for bachelor parties! Everyone will know his knew persona VULGAR THE BACHELOR PARTY CLOWN! Brilliant!

That is, until he goes on his first booking. He walks through the door to a depraved team of a degenerate father and his two freaky sons. They torture and rape Will repeatedly at gun point, and taping it all the while.

When they are done with him, they let him go. He goes home and acts like the rape victim you'd see in any other film. It's sad and touching.

And it's only halfway through the movie. I was about to shut this off for fear that it might actually get WORSE, if possible.

But, alas, this is when the happy parts starts. On his way to a job, Will saves a small child from an abusive father with a gun who was holding a team of cops at bay. I get the feeling that Will just didn't care about his life any longer and was willing to risk his own. Maybe even get killed. It would've been better than living with the horror of the memory of the rape. Instead, he saves the day and becomes a hero.

This catches attention of producers who give him a television show for children.

But the rapist catches Will's act and wants more. The final 15 minutes of the movie are so involved, that if I try to describe the events, you probably won't follow. But I can say good triumphs completely over evil, and Will lives happily ever after.

At times this movie is VERY hard to watch, but if you're a Kevin Smith fan you'll probably want to give it a look. It's interesting to see what makes the rapist monster tick. It's interesting to see the rape victim's thought process. It's sad to see the mother refuse to love her son. It's heavy but it's less than an hour and a half and you will be cheering at the end. It's just getting there is rough.

Quintessential quote from the movie:
Ed: All right, ass on the bed now.
[in William's face]
Ed: If I gotta tell you again, the wind is gonna be whistlin' dyksie through a hole in your face, you fuck. Me and you are goin' to bed together, that's a fact. I'm gonna make hate to you.
