As far back as I can remember I have always been a fan of science fiction. I guess my folks were fans, themselves, but would never say it in so many words.
Anyway, I've been trying to catch up on those "must see" movies lately here and there. One of the most legendary sci-fi flicks of all time has to be 2001: A Space Odyssey.
2001: A Space Odyssey is largely the pretentious work of Stanley Kubrick. The grandiose music at only certain tines. The intermission. Long periods of dead silence. It drones on and on.
The opening at the dawn of mankind was very well executed. The special effects for outer space were stunning.
Other than that, where's the story? It was thin. The entire thing was fragmented. Maybe I'm not profound enough to embrace Kubrick's vast intellect in this whole thing, but it was meaningless to me, mostly.
Okay. Monolith appears. Primates figure out how to use tools. Monolith appears again, a computer mutinies and kills the crew. What's the connection? And the ending? Were the lights supposed to be a display from the aliens? And what was that whole thing in the end in the bedroom?
Nonsense. All of it. This is probably the most overrated movie of all time. Kubrick ruined this like he ruined the wonderful book with his adaption of "A Clockwork Orange."

Color me thoroughly unimpressed.
