On DVD: Tommy Boy 1995

A couple weeks ago I was in the mood for a good chuckle and was trying to find a good comedy to rent. I kept walking by TOMMY BOY starring David Spade and Chris Farley. I've heard on several occasions that those two were an extraordinary comedy duo so I gave it a spin.

If you like that Chris Farley hyperactive fat guy humor, or the dry sarcasm of David Spade, then you'd probably like this. But if you were looking for a really funny comedy, then keep looking.

I'm not saying it wasn't funny at all. Yes, there were several funny parts of the movie, but not enough to really make it worthwhile for me to suggest people to check it out. If it's on TV and nothing better is on, it should be entertaining but won't be the best chuckle you've had in a while.

I call this flik OKAY at best.

Yeah, sometimes it can depend on what kind of mood you're in (or how many beer syou've had0 to appreciate a movie like this one. I think what made it popular was the strange balance of the big, slappy goofball and the slim sarcastc straight guy (like may popular dous--ren & stimpy, bud and lou, laurel and hardy, etc.). My personal fave as far as silly, absurd movies are concerned is "Dumb and Dumber". Jim Carrey (who is very talented but tolerable in small doses) and Jeff Daniels (who is a very versatile actor) have a great chemistry in this film and I think they do a fantastic job in the ultimite portrayal of supreme stupidity! Sometimes I'll hear someone say how stupid that film was which I'd have to agree with if they're referring to the general gist of the movie. However, again, I think the way sheer stupiditity is portrayed here is brilliant by these guys and probably couldn't have been pulled of so well by most actors.
