When neighbors attack, continued.

Last night I get home, weary after a long day at work. As I came down my block I see Dave sitting on his stoop, making a beckoning gesture that he wanted to talk. I pulled into my driveway and went to speak with him. We walked halfway up the block to speak out of earshot of Stacey and especially Angus.

"Why'd you have to call the Cops on Angus?" he said, getting to the point right away.

"Things have escalated. You're wife had no business being in my yard," I responded.

"What? Are you afraid of her?" he commented, in a slightly condescending tone.

"Of course not, but I'm not going to have a crazed lady yelling and screaming and threatening me in my own yard. She crossed the line, you must admit," I explained.

He nodded. "She shouldn't have been in your yard, you're right." And from there we discussed matters in a civil tone.

But he brought up some things that I was not previously aware of. All the acts of destruction being inflicted upon my household, the people across the street, and others in the neighborhood are the acts of some troublemaking pranksters who live around the corner. They're trying to rouse suspicion and anger in the neighborhood for their own entertainment. Dave told me that these hoodlums had a great belly laugh as they described their wickedness and how they brought their plans to fruition.

This was a provocative revelation. People in our neighborhood were unwitting pawns in some sinister game being played.

Armed with this new information I explained it all to Stacey. She was dumbstruck. It's so farfetched, yet makes such a huge amount of sense. A couple little stupid acts of vandalism can turn neighbors into enemies. So we vowed that we would seek out no retribution for any previous acts. Not that we ever did. The people across the street and Angus were always the belligerent ones, bellowing first and not bothering to look for answers.

And where does this leave us? I don't know. Stacey says she won't interact with these people, she won't fan this fire. But SHE was never the problem. Stacey's excellent at ignoring people. It's these two other hags that need to learn to shut their traps once in a while. I'm curious to see what unfolds this weekend... and the rest of the summer.
