(That's the tagline for the revival of Les Miz.)
Ever since I got my wife to FINALLY see a Broadway show not too far back, she's been told that she must experience Les Miserables. "Bring tissues" was the most common comment. So when they announced that Les Miz was returning to Broadway in a limited engagement, my wife wasted no time scoring some tickets for the show.
This is when things went wrong. We didn't know what to expect, except that it's been described over and over as the greatest thing we'll ever see on the stage. After seeing Phantom, our expectations were set pretty high. That was our mistake. It was a good show. The characters were likable. The development was good. It certainly had a great cast, a cast we had seen many of the various shows we'd previously seen. The stage and props were well done. It wasn't the greatest thing we had ever seen. Good? Sure. Greatest thing ever? Not so much.
So here's my bottom line. It's fine, but don't get all caught up in the hype. Go with NO expectations and you will enjoy it. It's good. You will hear those famous songs finally. But we were expecting so much more that my wife was underwhelmed and fell asleep. I liked it, but was disappointed that it didn't live up to all the glowing reviews I've heard over the years.
