I had the opportunity to give the the memoir of 80's glam-rock icon Nikki Sixx a read over my recent vacation. You don't have to be a genius to figure out what The Heroin Diaries are about. But to be more specific, it's Nikki's diary put to print from the turbulent year of 1987. Actually it starts with Christmas of 1986, and the diary ends the following Christmas.
You got the insight into what it was like to be a rock star on top of the world and what being a slave to the drugs does to destroy that euphoria.
There's over 400 pages to this book. Despite being heavily self-medicated for the bulk of the time frame, he managed to document so many details. He discussed other rock acts, song-writing, the Girls Girls Girls tour, his rocky relationship with Vanity, and of course, what the drugs did to him. The me this was the most compelling reading in a while. Anytime I picked up the book, I knew I would require at least 45-60 minutes of reading time, because you get all caught up in the story.
What makes this memoir even more interesting is the comments from the cast of characters mentioned in the book, such as the rest of the band, management, family, etc.
During the 80's I was A Crue fan, and really wanted to see what Nikki was up to while I was eagerly anticipating the Girls album. It's pretty freaky to see how bad his state was during that time and yet was still able to put it together to put out a record AND tour.
Be assured, this tale does NOT glorify drug abuse. After reading this, I was glad I never messed around with any kind of junk. It doesn't sound pretty to be so in love with a substance that you have to shoot shit into your johnson. That's not my bag.
At any rate, this was a great book. It was a wild trip to go long on and see through Nikki's eyes. I know I wouldn't want to live the way he did back then. If you like Motley Crue at all, or find this addictive personalities interesting to read about, you must to give this book a read, you won't be sorry.
Bottom line? Awesome book!
You can order it and put this under your Christmas tree from Amazon. I mean, the tale both starts and ends on Christmas, so why not?
