A shock came to my system when my main home PC started up and ran normally this morning. It's been days since it's gotten past the boot sequence. I was sure the BIOS was fried which means it's time for a new motherboard.
I got confirmation that the new board shipped yesterday from Hong Kong, so that means my machine HAD to run today to rub it in. Whatever. I hope it holds up until the new mainboard arrives, or else I'm stuck using the 500 mhz Compaq backup machine. Even with FIOS it sucks to use that pc for anything but connecting to work from home.
