Five Questions With...Kate Beckinsale

HL: Have you ever experienced "the casting couch?"

KB: When I was 17 a director in Paris asked me to take off my dress, saying that everybody was doing it and that he wanted to make sure I was thin. I did and I felt horrible about it.

HL: Was it odd being directed by your husband in a movie you were in with your ex-husband?

KB: Michael, my ex, is in the movie (UNDERWORLD 2) only by proxy. He dies in the first movie so they cut him into it. That's all.

HL: What were you like to date when you were younger?

KB: I was quite anti-relationship, mostly because everybody suddenly got breasts before I did. I was quite happy just going roller skating I preferred being lonely in my bedroom and listening to Elvis Costello.

HL: Why did you leave Oxford and start acting?

KB: Oxford is the most magical and amazing place but it wasn't great for me. I had always been bright but not academic. I became an actress because of Jeanne Moreau.

HL: Finally, were you surprised at how small your role was in AVIATOR?

KB: I was in it for about two-and-a-half minutes! I had gained a bunch of weight to play Ava Gardner because women then were curvy and substantial - it was my Robert De Niro moment. Except all they said was, "Ah, she's had a boob job."
