In Print: Goldfinger by Ian Fleming (1959)

Bond week continues! The next book up is the next one in succession, Goldfinger. This book is about the patience of the Soviet spy machine during the Cold War Era.

Auric Goldfinger is a dealer of Gold and well known for it throughout Britain. As it turns out, he's an agent of SMERSH. His job is to use England's gold against it. He buys it up and sells it in other markets to build up wealth. When he grew bored of the whole thing he decides to go for bigger game in the United States, Fort Knox. Of course Bond is able to thwart the plan with teh assistance of his American friend, Felix Leiter.

The amount of detail in this conspiracy is quite amazing. It makes it more electrifying to read. It's a clever tale, fun and fast pasced.

In Print: Dr. No by Ian Fleming (1958)

So far this novel, Dr. No is one of the most intriguing Bond books I have yet to read. The amount of racism in this book is off that charts!

The book is named after the villain, Dr. No. As described in the book Dr. No is a ruthless "Chinaman" who employs "Chigroes" ( a mix of Chinese and Negroes, likely from Jamaica) in a very involved multi-layer Cold War plot against the US. Essentially Dr. No will work for anyone willing to pay him. He's got all manner of devices for jamming and spying on American military transmissions. All of his evil work is hidden cleverly behind his front, a fertilizer business that uses bird crap.

Of course Bond is able to defeat this evil-doer, but not before all sorts of mayhem breaks out all over the place.

This might be one of the most inventive, if not odd, Bond stories I have ever read.

In Print: From Russia With Love by Ian Fleming (1957)

As you might guess, this is a James Bond book about a huge Soviet conspiracy taking advantage of his greatest weakness: BEAUTIFUL WOMEN!

The Soviets have grown tired of a certain British agent mucking up their plans. So SMERSH trains a very beautiful woman to seduce Bond and to make him fall in love with her.

About one third of the book is dedicated to the Soviets setting up the plan. About another third is about the plan going into effect. Finally the last third is where all hell breaks loose.

This is the Soviet plan: they want to set Bond up so he dies in disgrace. They wanted to kill him and the girl and make it look like a murder / suicide -- a crime of passion with a member of the enemy! As you can well imagine, it doesn't work out and Bond barely squeaks out of this tale alive. The ending is a really thrilling cliff-hanger.

Definitely a wild ride for, even for a 007 book!

Whether you call him the Dancing Outlaw or the Dancing Elvis, or by his real name Jesco White, you know he's a pisser. Steve Bunche introduced a couple of us to this guy years ago, and none of us could forget it:

In Print: Diamonds Are Forever by Ian Fleming (1956)

Next! Diamonds are Forever. When large quantities of diamonds are getting smuggled out of South Africa and are making their way to the United States, James Bond is put on the case.

It turns out to be James Bond vs. the mafia as it turns out to be the work of the "Speckled Mob." As always Bond lets his racism get in his way, after all how tough can a couple of Italian Meatballs be?

They turn out to be plenty tough and the adventure takes Bond across the US, from New York to Las Vegas, for the big showdown.

This is another fascinating tale. the perceived strength of the mod during the 50's really is evident in this book. Another one that's quick and fun to read.

In Print: Moonraker by Ian Fleming (1955)

This is the third James Bond novel. If you remember anything from the movie by the same name, forget it, this is a completely different story.

This story is about a British WWII hero named Drax who is using his fortune to assist the country compete in the arms race. The man is considered a national hero! Bond is put in the job to supervise and to be sure no one sabotages anything. As it turns out, Drax is actually German Commando who assumed the role of Drax. He's in league with the Soviets to have his great missile, the Moonraker, impact in London on it's test mission.

Of course Bond figures it out and saves the day with the assistance of a beautiful undercover police officer.

This is another fun, quick-to-read adventure. Bond is manly, and not a poof like the Bond that Brosmnan played in recent years. It's worth the read for the look into the world during the Cold War. Indeed, very interesting.

In Print: Live and Let Die by Ian Fleming (1954)

Live And Let Die was the second Bond novel written by Ian Fleming. James Bond is sent to the US to intercept a suspected SMERSH agent who's leaving a trail of gold coins across the country that were stolen from Jamaica. When this agent is discussed between M and Bond, James said that with such people he employs the philosophy "Live and Let Die" and hence the title of the book.
This is another fairly smooth and straightforward tale. Bond meets up with CIA man Felix Leiter to got after the villain, Mr Big. In doing so they "acquire" Domino, the woman Mr Big greatly desires. He takes her back then feeds Leiter to a shark. Bond tracks Big to Jamaica where Bond settles the score.
It's an interesting adventure, but more interesting is the writing. Being written in 1954 there are many racist tones in this book, things that no author could get away with in current days. Worth reading just for the journey into what society looked like in 1954.

In the cinema: Star Trek (2009)

I am not a fan of the Star Trek franchise. I am not a Trekkie. I usually strike that up to when you were born. I was born in 1971, Star Trek was running in reruns for most of my life. Somehow I never caught the excitement of it that my folks had. If Trek was on, they were watching it. No, for me it wasn't Star Trek, but Star WARS. By 1977 I had matured enough to actually understand what was going on in Star Wars and it opened up my imagination and pretty much shaped the way I would turn out in life.
During the 80's Star Trek made a come-back. New movies with the original cast were being made. I still had little, to no, interest at all. Over the coming decades there were to be four new Star Trek series, and nine movies. The only one I really liked was The Wrath of Kahn which was a serious kick-ass movie and the only one I saw in the theater was the one that the cast of The Next Generation battle the borg for the planet Earth. Since I can't even remember the name of that one, you can tell I wasn't too crazy about it either.
So when I heard that J.J. Abrams was going to "reboot" the franchise I had low expectations. Who needs another boring Star Trek movie? But as time passed and more was being released about the movie, the better it looked. Finally it opened a couple weeks ago to stellar reviews (no pun intended) and the #1 spot at the box office. I wanted to see this movie VERY badly. My wife was desperate NOT to see it. But her friend wanted to see it and asked if we'd join her, Mrs. Bax0jayz was out-voted.
All the reviews were right. This is a Star Trek movie anyone can watch. I'm not a fan, but I LOVED it! The cast is great. The special effects are top notch. Awesome story. Everything about ti perfect, especially Simon Pegg as Scotty!
But I digress. This is a prequel to the original series. You get to see the events that brought everyone together on the Enterprise and how Kirk ascended to the seat of Captain of the Enterprise.
It's a really fun flick, and moves very quickly. It didn't even feel like 2+ hours. IF you ever liked Trek, or were even on the fence, you should really give this a shot. If you hated Trek you might still like this because it's so much better than anything that has been out there before. I highly recommend this movie!

In Print, Casino Royale by Ian Fleming

After seeing the movie by the same name on DVD last year, I thought it would be interesting to read the story of a flawed James Bond. A new double O agent trying to get his job done, but making mistakes along the way.

The title was used for two James Bond movies, but both were very loosely based on the book. In the earlier version from 1967 Peter Sellers plays an aged Bond who comes out of retirement for this case. I never saw that film, but based on the cast (Woody Allen is in it!) it looks like a spoof. You can find out more about it here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061452/ More recently Casino Royale was done with Daniel Craig playing a young 007 who is new to the service and not being so polished. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0381061/ He did well in the role and for the first time they created a direct sequel to a Bond film that came out in November, Quantum of Solace.

But before any of the films, was the book. Casino Royale was the first book written by Fleming in the James Bond series. Casino Royale was the one that started everything. From the pages you get the feeling that Bond isn't completely green in this tale, but not a completely seasoned veteran. He's sent to Casino Royale to try to muck up a game of baccarat being hosted by a SMERSH agent. SWERSH is the Soviet Secret Service and Bond's sworn enemy.

During the course of the assignment the character Felix Leiter is introduced. He's from the CIA and the two will go on several adventures together throughout the novels. Also Bond meets the girl of the book that he falls in love with and allows her to distort his perception.

I will not tell you what goes on in any detail, but as you can imagine, Bond defeats the other spy in a dramatic way, essentially signing his foe's death warrant. He makes himself a marked man with SMERSH, literally, and has to be saved by the CIA man. He gets the girl. She offs herself because she's a double agent. The books with an angry broken Bond declaring war on SMERSH.

This novel is definitely light reading and the tale isn't too deep or involved. It's also very interesting from a sociological point of view. There are racial stereotypes, very different points of view, it's like a view into a completely different world than we live in now. It's definitely interesting, if not educational to read. If you can find a copy, give it a shot.

Today's Holiday: Memorial Day

A special heartfelt thanks to all the soldiers who ever served to protect freedom and liberty in the US. This is a day of remembrance for all those brave people who gave some, and some who gave all for the good of the Nation.

Here's a better definition:

Memorial Day, holiday in the United States observed in late May. Previously designated Decoration Day, it was inaugurated in 1868 by Gen. John A. Logan for the purpose of decorating the graves of Civil War veterans and has since become a day on which all war dead are commemorated.

depredation \dep-ruh-DAY-shun\, noun:

  1. An act of plundering or despoiling; a raid.
  2. [Plural] Destructive operations; ravages
Depredation comes from Late Latin depraedari, "to plunder," from Latin de- + praedari, from praeda, "plunder, prey."
Manufactured Outrage
  • A falsified righteous outrage at things that are basically unimportant and meaningless, frequently employed by politicians, political activists, or the media. Politicians and talking heads use it to garner support for their causes, to claim the moral high ground and to tar their opponents; the media often just uses it in a cynical bid to increase ratings.
  • Manufactured outrages of note include Nipplegate, the Monica Lewinski scandal, the 2009 tea partys, backmasked satanic lyrics, lapel pin controversies...
Just about any time you hear any politician, activist, or radio show host getting outraged about anything, really. The louder and angrier they get, the harder they're working at manufacturing it.

Jack's Mannequin Encourage Fans To Submit Artwork For New Video

Jack's Mannequin are creating a special music video for their powerful single "Swim." The lyrics, music and video are about keeping hope alive and growing in the difficult times that the world is now facing. The video is designed to inspire strength, courage and perseverance in the face of all obstacles.

The band will be shooting a music video for "Swim" in June and want fans' artwork in the video. Within the context of the song, the word “Swim” is used as a metaphor for “hope, perseverance, courage, determination and strength.” Andrew McMahon and the band are asking members of the fan community to create pieces of artwork that feature the word "Swim" and illustrate, in any way chosen, the meaning behind the word. They can be represented in an abstract or representational manner - any way the artist sees fit, in any medium the artist chooses!

Head over to JacksMannequin.com to find out all the submission details. Deadline for all artwork is May 29th.
