Review Tuesday - On DVD: District 9

Mrs. Bax0jayz gave me this movie, District 9, for either Christmas or Valentine's Day and only just had time to watch it this past weekend!

I must say I was a little concerned about watching it. Critics gave it mixed reviews, and my friends (the reviews that really COUNT in my book) panned it. So I put all notions out of my mind and watched it.

The movie is two hours of solid science fiction. If you can't stand movies with hideous aliens, you will NOT like this movie. But I happen to like vile aliens, so I was drawn in.

The concept: an alien craft desecends on Earth and sits above South Africa. The aliens it contained are herded up and removed from the craft and made to live in a shanty town in Johannesburg known as District 9.

The movie is about one man, Wikus Van De Merwe, who is made to oversee the relocation of the aliens (called prawns) to a concentraion camp when a bottle of alien fuel sprays on him. The rest of the film is about how the fuel changes his DNA and makes him into a prawn. But before he changes over, he assists a prawn scientist to escape in the mother ship.

Most reviewers preferred the first hour as it contained all the background story. It draws parallels to the racism that existed in that very spot. Thinly veiled. It's essentially a documentary in the beginning and the critics love crap like that. Sci-Fi fans liked the second half with all the action. It IS fun watching people explode! And I was able to see what poeple liked about it from both sides. I really DID enjoy watching this movie, but was left feeling a little empty by the ending. It is really set up for a sequel that I'm not sure will ever come. What will happen to Wikus Van De Merwe and the prawns? Who knows. But I still thing the movie is worth watching. It was big news last year and I can see why! Don't worry, the political correctness isn't overbearing. Check it out!

I liked it. The reviews were mixed though. Not sure which camp you'd be in.
