Today I'm posting a couple reviews of Suckerpunch by my friend, pin-up artist Conny Valentina.
I saw Sucker Punch last night and I have a completely different view that many critics seem to that are panning this movie. Have no clue why it is being received so harshly, but the fact is, it really is a beautiful half mess. Don't read the following if you haven't seen it.
The whole thing could have been salvaged if the last moments had a change of character. I thought that is where he was going, making this all about Sweat Pee and nothing to do with Baby DOll, it would have truly been a perfect film then. It made more sense that this was Sweet Pea in the end being labotomised. Hence why she gets on the bus at the end with all the people from the third level, all getting on the bus with her.
All levels had their reasons. The Brothel was showing the viewer that while comatose, these girls were being abused in the first level. That is very evident by the final scenes when the men say 'we can't do this anymore, hurt these girls like this'.
It was an amazingly inspiring vision, one that is unapologetic, bad things happen to good people, and we are kidding ourselves if we think differently. When Babydoll dances, it is telling the viewer she is infact being abused, hence the need to escape to the third reality.
If only it had been Sweat Pea sitting in that chair in the end as the camera panned back I would have given it a resounding ten.
A very sad and engaging movie, that needed more filler, and I hope that the 18 extra minutes that will be added in the DVD release fills in some of the blanks. In the end, I know it is also open to interpretation, but Baby Doll is the guardian angel of the movie, she is the strength that Sweet Pea needs to get herself out. The parallels in each girls story is glaring obvious, both with sisters that die leading the viewer to very slowly realise one is the others guide to salvation.
ADDENDUM: After seeing it a second time, it all made perfect sense, and now I understand it far better, and feel it is infact a work of art. Just sheer brilliance. Baby Doll is definitely the Guardian Angel even though she is real, and she is there to save Sweet Pea and then live life through her freedom. But it was the levels that were the brilliant part. One level created for the girls to escape the horror of the first level and the second level created by the film maker to save the viewer from the horror of the first level.
I have so much love for this movie it's crazy. And that anyone would say this is Snyder's worst movie leads me to believe they really didn't get it. Which is understandable, it took me two goes to really see it.
