doggerel \DAW-ger-uhl, DOG-er-\, adjective:
  • (of verse) a. comic or burlesque, and usually loose or irregular in measure. b. rude; crude; poor.
noun:
  • doggerel verse.
Doggerel is likely a blend of dog and the pejorative suffix -rel. It came to English in the 1400s as a way to insult bad poetry by implying that it could have been created by dogs, or could have only been enjoyed by dogs.
Vatican Roulette
  • Another name for the rhythm method of birth control. Called so because it is the only form of contraception endorsed by the Catholic Church.
Well, the Pope says condoms are out, and the pill is born of the fires of Hell. So get out the calendar, baby, it's time for Vatican roulette.
Trivia
Where did Larry David, creator and star of the TV sitcom Curb Your Enthusiasm, first hear “Frolic,” the tune that became his show’s theme song?
  • In a bank commercial, in the mid-1990s. David was so taken with the music, written by Italian composer Luciano Michelini, that he kept information about it on file for future use. The future arrived in 2000 when he launched his offbeat sitcom.
