Review Tuesday: Turbotax 2016

Now that tax season and extensions are over I'll discuss TURBOTAX. The biggest name in accounting and tax software for idiots in the USA put out another barely passable product. Anytime you try to do anything, the software prompts you to upgrade to a more expensive version. And that data entry process is awful, takes an eternity just to do W2 data entry. Then it asks you questions and eliminates entire schedules (such as Sch E for Rent and Royalties) for no good reason. Preparing Schedule C is a process that makes you prefer death as opposed to dealing with all the dummy screens.

In short, the program might get the job done IF you already know what you're doing. If not, you can easily be led down a path of pain and misery as it excludes items that it really should. So, if you have a simple tax scenario, it'll suffice. If you have investments, rentals, etc, you should pay a professional to do it for you.
