My Post From Hobbyfanatics.com:
I haven't chimed in on this because I have too many thoughts to type, but please allow me a moment...
I have been in this hobby for over 20 years. I'm a modeler with a huge collection, ranging from white metal, to plastic, to vinyl and resin. I have it all represented in my collection. Despite the fact I bought a lot of kits from e2046 and hobbyfan, I can easily say that my collection is STILL almost entirely original (going by percentages OR volume!). I buy what is available to me. Every plastic kit I have is original. Every American Resin/Vinyl kit is original. Many of my Japanese resin are original. I get the originals when I can but since the Japanese stuff is so hard to come by (it took me YEARS to find my grail kit GUNDAM LAST SHOOTING by B-Club) that it's not worth my effort to seek out the originals. If they produced more and made them more available I'd certainly buy more.
Legality? Stealing someone's property? To me that's all nonsense. There's nothing I hate more than those guys who scream "Death to Recasters." Recasters would have no market if the originals were more available at more reasonable prices.
Produce more original kits at better prices and the recasters would be out of business.
Sometimes you find recasts of long gone kits. If not for the recast these things would've been gone forever. KUDOS TO THEM! If the sculptor or the producer cared they'd still make them. They don't they obviously don't care about the fans, so screw them. And while I'm at it, a lot of these guys in the US who scream "Death to recasters" are stealing someone else's idea / property and profitting from it themselves. I wonder how many of those kits of Wolverine were licensed? Or any of the other super heroes and comic book charaters?
So in the end, I buy what is available to me. I read AFM and the other US mags and order the originals as they come out. I got one of the first Selene Busts when they were available from http://x-factorproductions.com/. I'll drop my money where people will make it easy for me to spend it. If it takes work to track down a long gone kit, then screw it. I'm not interested. I'll skip it or of a recast turns up then fine. I'm a modeler, dammit, not a detective! Aight?
