4th of July Weekend: Denny's Beer Barrel Pub

This was it. Sunday. The main reason for this little road trip. We were headed off to Denny's Beer Barrel Pub. Located in Clearfield, PA, this is a place where legends are born.

How can an unassuming little wooden place like this (right) warrant such a reputation? It's what's on the menu...

The famed 96 oz burger. The Six Pounder!

When we got there a group of 8 people had just gotten two six pounders to split, and we saw that they couldn't eat it all. We quickly changed our minds and downgraded to the 2 pounder. You can see me with it, to the right. I thought I was going to totally pwnz3r that burger, but alas it took my soul.

Here's the deal... you get one hour to eat that burger. You must eat every little bit of it. You can't leave the place. You can't vomit. You can't use SILVERWARE. That was my biggest problem. I HATE getting food on my fingers. I was wiping and wiping and wiping my fingers. What a sloppy mess. They weren't kidding when they said a river of mayo, mustard, and ketchup. With all the fixings, a 2 pounder grew to FIVE POUNDS.

All the while, a little lady walked in. She sat down with a book and was reading when they brought out her SIX POUNDER. You can see her pic to the right. Her name is Lori Weiss, a small local girl. I don't think she has seen 100 pounds even if she was soaking wet with her pockets filled with change. She is on the wall of fame for eating ALL of the other various burgers, and sometimes in record times even! She was even offering some sage words on how to pack in more food. She didn't eat for over a day, but drank a gallon of water at a time the day before. Brilliant! On a burger that size you get three hours to eat it to beat the challenge. At the 2 hour mark she was very close to finishing it. Very impressive.

If you are in that neck of the woods, I highly recommend it! The food tastes really good. Great beef. Extra fresh vegies. Huge menu. Nice beer selection. The wait staff is extra friendly. Even the cooks came out to say HI.

Thumbs up!

PS: In case anything wasn't clear, I DID say that it took my soul. That never means you defeated it.

After a 45 minute struggle the burger won out. I ate all the vegies on it, the top bun, and about 1/3 of the meat before I felt uncomfortable. With 15 minutes to go, and the entire bottom bun with relish and 2/3 of the meat, I knew I wasn't pulling this one out.

There are no in process pics. Why? Cuz NO ONE touches my cam with sloppy fingers. And the staff were busy crowding Lori, as they were expecting her to knock off her 6 pounder. We were all too busy eating to be bothered. We didn't even think about pics while we ate. Time wasn't on our sides. None of us beat the burger that day...

...except for Lori. A true hero of American Folklore!

I really appreciate your providing an eyewitness account of Lori's amazing accomplishment. I am a fan of competitive eating, especially female competitive eaters and have a blog devoted to that subject at http://www.trencherwomen.com/ About how long did it take for Ms. Weiss to finish the burger? It is surprising that no media coverage was given to Lori's feat and that she has apparently not competed outside of Denny's when she might have the potential to challenge Kobayashi in the July 4 hot dog contest.

Thanks for any extra information you can provide

Lori was trying to break the other girl's time. After two hours she was VERY close to finishing the buger, but NOT having the speed record.

Lori told us that she did hold all the female speed records for all the other size burgers. Since they knew her there they even made custom sized burgers just for her.

I emailed the address found at dennysbeerbarrelpub.com about the result of Lori Weiss's attempt and received the following response:

Hello from the Pub I’m happy to report that Lori Weis completed the
Ye Ole 96er in 2 hours 54 minutes to tie Kate Stelnick for the
record…Thanks for asking Denny

It is hard to believe that the two people to finish the 96er in under three hours have a combined weight of about 200 pounds. Since Lori Weiss weighs only about 90 pounds she is probably the champion in percentage of bodyweight consumed except for possibly Kobayashi.

Adults weren’t ready to cede pizza to children, though.
Professional pizza chefs like the unnamed Japanese-American woman who stumped the panel of the TV show "What’s My Line?" in 1956, and the Mexican-Americans who helped make pizza the second-best seller at the 1952 Texas State Fair (edged out only by the irresistible corn dog), and fledgling franchises like Pizza Hut, gradually shed all Italian imagery from their advertising campaigns.
