In the cinema: Sherlock Holmes

When I heard that Guy Ritchie was doing a Sherlock Holmes movie, I was expecting it to be the worst thing ever. As far as I'm concerned, Guy Ritchie has never put out anything worth seeing, why would he start now?

Apparently he did. He took the old stuffy, stiff-back Holmes from the books and made him into a brawling action hero. So I went with a group of friends to see it. It's 2+ hours of deep thought and fisticuffs.

When a violent murderer seems to rise from the dead, it's up to Sherlock Holmes and John Watson to spoils his plans for world domination. As typical with a Guy Ritchie movie, there is a subplot that introduces Moriarty, the villain throughout the books, and leaves an opening to a sequel.

What's good? The movie is smart and moves along nicely. What's bad? When Holmes assesses a situation in his head, they show it, then when he does it, it's shown again. It starts to grow dull after a while. The female lead, Rachel McAdams is, somehow, made to look unsexy. The rapid fire British can get past you. I never got fully used to all the accents in the movie and there are scenes that I wasn't able to keep up with. But all in all, the good out weighs the bad. Ritchie did a good job.
